Re: CULT:Pot culture yet again

George, we all grow irises for different reasons, but surely the main reason
is because we love them. Do NOT throw away anything that you will miss!
You'll just have to buy it again! Sometimes you can't find them later! I speak
from experience!

It sounds as though you are moving EVERYTHING to pots? I only grow a select
few cultivars in pots. These are irises I can't get to grow any other way.
RUFFLED BALLET is getting another trial here. I've not been able to grow
RB or many of her children in the past.

I'd like to make one small correction. It was Linda talking about the % of
perilite all along. I use the Baccto because it's what I've come to trust.
In the archives you might find an article about the time I went to another
mix for my seedligs with near disastrous results. I've not mixed my own.

<<Is it worthwhile use of pots to keep pretty oncers who are good parents,
or should I only collect rebloomers who have the genetic potential, even if it
is in sunny California?>>
George, This is a link to a post I made in Nov. 2002. I post it because it
contains an excerpt from something Monty Byers said regarding California
rebloom.

_TB:REB:Old news_

Several people have reported success with breeding rebloom from oncers. I
submit that irises they think are oncers are truly 'carriers'. Carriers or
California rebloomers are among the class of rebloom listed as 'sporadic.'

My personal experience is that rebloom will not occur in the first
generation when using true oncers. This is in MY garden. I'm in zone 6 so it's
possible that the seedlings I'm referring to would rebloom in  zones 8 or 9;
however, I've not been able to get reports on these.

Silverado X Immortality produced some lovely plants but no rebloom. With
all my Silverado crosses, it has taken at least three generations to get
rebloom back.( in my zone 6 area.) Silverado has been my most resistant.

There are many beautiful sporadic/California rebloomers/carriers that can be
used in crosses. My recommendation is to stick with them. Search for these
in catalogs and Recorder reports and in the archives of this list.

Remember that I can only tell you what has worked for me.
