Arnold - I think it's a symptom of molligrubs.

<Arnold  --  It is the opposite of "hairy rhizomes" and is the first
warning sign that all of your irises are going to turn white.  I hope

<Patrick Orr, you used the term "Bald rhizomes."  I've been into iris
culture a
                   long time, but that's a new one on me.  Will you
