George,
Everything I've read says not to use garden soil, in the pots. I've not
read anything on the list, either way.
I only use pots for cultivars that refuse to grow in my garden soil and my
yearly crop of seedling pots. I always carry the pots over for a second year.
Sometimes more. The pots do not escape the weeds and grass. The seeds
blow in.
Parts of my garden have plastic in the paths. It does help. Like the pots
and soil, there is an initial outlay for plastic and the landscape anchors.
Anchors are available in quantity from online nursery supply. This combined
with Preen does help. I also use Roundup for middles that don't have the
plastic.
If it grows in your garden, I recommend that over the pots for most areas.
