Re: RE: CULT & HYB: Poppers and greenhouses

My pots from last year (my first year) were all on top of the ground. But then again, I"m zone 4, and may have frozen the seeds.

I'd be shocked if my seeds started germinating!!!! I guess I'd fix the greenhouse, wouldn't I???!!! I think I'd actually be happier if they germinated this fall, even if Spring is literally 8 WHOLE MONTHS AWAY! (I'm not shouting, or mad . . . just emphasizing.)

I'm going to dig around in the 2004 pots to see just how many seeds are popping. If all the fatter seeds are the poppers, and all the skinny ones seem not to have an endosperm, I'll just toss everything in the dog-pile. Hey, at least I have 4 seedlings!

Can only speak for me. Do not plant my pots. Only my seed. If I had a
place and space I would open up a v trench and place the pots in there, but I
don't always have the space or the time or energy. They usually spend the
winter clustered together on top of the ground.

But Adam would be wise to find someone in his area that breeds whatever he
is working on. Years ago, I was under the impression that people with NO
winter were the only ones that went to all the extra trouble with iris seed. But
I can see where someone with a short growing season might need to manipulate
the seed, also.

Adam, if these start to germinate soon, what are your plans for wintering
them over? You say that is not really a green house.

Also, I often get as many (sometimes more) sprouts the second year. If it's
a cross I thing has great potential I may keep the pot longer. Three new
seedlings this spring in a favored cross from the 2001 crop. I've already seen
children from a sibling.
