Re: OT-CHAT: ducks and June bugs


Having seen the saying in action, it is really quite remarkable to
watch.  Duck-duck would litterally run, wings outstretched, jump, and
snatch them out of the air.  Very avid and active predatory behavior for
a fat white domestic duck.  She would stuff herself on as many as she
could catch.

When June bugs first emerge, they tend to fly around fairly close to the
ground - less than 4 ft maybe.  Here, they emerge in large numbers all
at once, making a great buzzing 'cloud' for a day or so, until they
disperse.  Or get eaten.  <g>

<Ducks eat beetles with some avidity so the saying that So and So is
going to
                     come down on Someone "like a duck on a June bug"
means like a duck sighting a
                     June bug and snapping it up without niceties,
toying about, or discussion. >
