I can't speak for hornets, but bee stings and wasp respond well to the  juice 
of an onion. Personal experience . . . wasp sting on my foot. . . rubbed a  
sliced onion on the sting, off and on, for an hour, and pretty much got rid on  
the sting.  You have to make sure you get the juice though.  A  poultice 
would work well.  Probably works for hornet stings too, but  haven't tried it.
