Mike, I agree completely with most of what you say, but with all due
respect, my climate is <very> different from yours as far as bearded
irises are concerned.
Our climates are more similar than a Mediterranean climate, but most
people in this climate have already found out for themselves that
<modern> bearded irises <can> be really hard to grow, they rot and die
most of the time, <unless> they get locally grown plants (i.e., the ones
that <do> thrive here). They don't need to read what I have to say
about it, they already know.
Do iris borers live in your climate? They do not last long in my
climate. I've grown irises for 35 yrs in the same location and have
seen iris borers here once (last year, when I suspect some plants
imported from a northern location fighting massive borer infestation
brought in some eggs). None this year.
I'm guessing iris borers evolved to live in a climate where bearded
irises thrive. <g>
