Interesting,
I lived 8 miles from Big Springs as a kid, and never knew there had been
an Iris grower there. Sounds like she was introducing plants about 10
years before I would have noticed, but might have still been living and
growing Iris there when I was there? Lots of nice Iris to be found on old
abandoned farmsteads around there (or there used to be in the 60's &
70's). Interestingly they were all TB's, a few old diploids and
IB's/germanicas, or Spurias. Never saw a dwarf bearded Iris in a garden
anywhere around there, and the few I tried didn't do so well for me back
then. Went to school in Julesburg, Colorado, lived just across the line
in Nebraska. One of these days I'd like to go visit the old stomping
grounds again; last time I went through there was in 1987, and it was just
a quick zip by. I don't remember ever meeting anyone by the name of
Grapes.

All of the MDBs in Betty's list are listed in the Dwarf Iris Society 1992
Checklist as being introduced by Franklin Gardens, Big Springs, NE. The
garden
was given as no longer in business. Vivian Grapes was listed as deceased
and
Hazel Grapes was listed as living in Big Springs, NE. The intro years are
as
