Observations - would love to hear comments from the rest of you on
this...
When I started daubing pollen using really strong older cultivars (PINK
FORMAL, HELEN COLLINGWOOD, SHAH JEHAN, SHANNOPIN), some traits that I
didn't want from them were obvious - narrow form, low bud count, thin
weak stalks (more prone to bending when blooms open rather than falling
over). Substance varies a lot from tissue paper to rubbery. I didn't
realize before I started how much less 'mess' modern irises have on the
hafts/shoulders/around the beard.
All of these traits are much improved in modern irises, assuming we all
like high bud count, wider and stiffer petals, erect stalks, and cleaner
hafts.
One trait that I hadn't thought about ahead of time and I don't think
we've discussed here before is color - both colorfast-ness and effects
of growing conditions.
Has this improved in all or most or many color classes in modern irises?
Late last fall, maiden bloom on a reblooming variegata seedling,
grandchild of PINK FORMAL, opened with lush, velvety, dark red falls and
somewhat tan tinted gold standards. Spring bloom and late spring repeat
blooms were regular yellow standards and washed out red falls. I wonder
if growing in cooler temperatures 'up noath' it would have those lush
colors again.
Anybody know if this kind of variability of color is much improved in
modern breeding lines or if this is a problem sometimes?
If it has improved, anybody have a thought as to whether it's a dosage
effect or an either/or type trait? Does it have something to do with
pigment production or with the stability of the pigment after it's
produced?
Has an influence on what types of crosses I might try with this thing.
