Re: CULT:

Thanks all.

Now I see why there weren't any responses the first time - the consensus seems to be this is a pretty dumb idea <g>

Not the first time I had one of those! ;-(

This "bed" is being treated like a giant flower pot - it's actually in a container of sorts (an old seed germination flat, abandoned after the dog buried the skunk, mixing up my labels), intentionally placed near the house & water hose, in part shade, where I am most likely to give it moderate care, at least until after bloom season.

So far, it seems to drain really well and isn't drying out anywhere near as fast as the "dirty perlite" pots in this heat. Looks & feels like it is mostly partially decomposed wood.

It is much too shallow for optimal long term iris growth here - but I figure it will do while I evaluate their ability to tolerate dew (assuming we get rain again), late freezes, and other miserable environmental growing conditions here.

It's not quite as sub-optimal as some of my poor seedlings have put up with this year - just moved about 6 seedlings that germinated this spring out of a 4 inch (!) pot into a 3 gallon container. Talk about not having room for roots! Plus erratic watering. At least they were in light shade, poor things.

Thanks again - I guess I will water them down with some soluble root booster with extra phosphorus and let it go at that.

Way past having energy for all the optimal growing suggestions of rototilling, soil mixing etc. Tree roots, rocks, 100 degree temps, poor air quality, no rain for what seems like a year - not going to happen here.
