Re: CULT: potting mix question

Guess I should have re-posted my original post.

Here's the deal - a week? 2 weeks? ago, I unexpectedly received about 20 very nice, new to me, but of untested pedigrees in my growing conditions. I'm currently using all my "garden" space for seedlings, plus a few tough cultivars, growing all the new stuff in pots so I can bring them indoors if the weather requires it.

I didn't have time/room/energy to fix a place to plant them, wanted to get them off the porch and growing right away. They are likely to need special tending (i.e., not like my seedlings which are taking all the 'garden' space I have), including being protection from freezes.

I bought the potting mix and planted the rhizomes last month when I first asked the question. Originally planned to just dump the mix on top of the ground, but knew they would be impossible to keep watered in this drought with all the competing tree roots. So had the bright idea of using a great big container (i.e., abandoned skunk flat). It has a roofing tin bottom, with .22 bullet holes for drainage, plus slow leaks around all the edges.

The rhizomes are in the mix, have been there for about a week, with crushed dolomitic limestone added, and are starting to grow. Only question remaining was how much, timing, type of fertilizer to add.

Anner, this mix seems to hold moisture very well in a large heap, tho I can see it might be hard to keep steady moisture supply in a small pot.

Why did I chose this particular product? Because I'd seen it used <for irises> at a local club member's house with great success. She used it because she didn't know any better, but had such good success, I thought I'd try it myself.

If they live and bloom and I get good pollen from any of them that I wind up using, that will be very nice.

If not, it's not been a major investment of time, space, energy or cash.

Again, thanks for the feedback.
