you chemists).  Unfortunately as the pH drops, elemental aluminum
becomes available to the plant.  Aluminum is toxic to plants and will
kill them.

The Ensata folks also said that the sudden drop in pH would put the plants 
into severe shock -- put them into a state in which they cannot absorb
needed plant nutriants -- and they might not survive.
