New Zealand iris people

To sonya Van der Hulle

Your message from the other side of the world from here brought back
fond memories of the visit my wife and I paid to the N. Z. Iris Society
Convention in 1983. We arrived there Nov. 23rd and HectorCollins met us at
the airport with a spuria iris in his lapel to identify himself. When we
arrived at his home we found almost every kind of iris in bloom at the same
time (with the exception of the dwarfs) It is such a super country to grow
iris in and as they say "more English than the British" - its true - every
home along the streets in the small towns had their flower gardens right on
their front lawns - hardly any grass! It was an amazing site to see and the
parks - superb. A lot of them with campgrounds in a corner far better than
the average over here. We toured in a caravan 2600 miles on both islands and
although there were not so many iris in the deep south - not compatable with
the glaciers I expect, there were still nice gardens in the towns. I do
hope some of my old iris friends with be brushing up on their computers and
turning up on the Net.
