Aluminum Sulfate will acidify quicker and drop the pH farther than
sulfur or ferrous sulfate (Copperas).  It is an amphoteric compound (for
you chemists).  Unfortunately as the pH drops, elemental aluminum
becomes available to the plant.  Aluminum is toxic to plants and will
kill them.
The Ensata Garden boys told me not to use it on the Japanese Iris.
That's probably why it's cheaper than Copperas.
