In a message dated 96-09-24 10:49:15 EDT, you write:
<< Gee what a week!! I am getting married Saturday; I got flamed for the
first
time (was that crazy or what?); got an orchid that wasn't supposed to bloom
till after we were gone on honeymoon, and opened TODAY!; my daughters
birthday is Friday; I will receive some donated La's in the mail in the next
couple of days;
AND my parents and husbands mom will be in Wed.
Are you sure that you don't want to just climb on your Harley and head out
into the sunset? Maybe elope. By the time you hit Bermuda I would be ready
to collapse.
Congratualtions and good luck.
BACK on track, I really appreciated the comments by Clarence and Tom (and
replies) about the judging criteria and perhaps changes. I have not been to
a show, so I dont know how it goes, but from listening here to to the folks
who DO know, there seems to be a slight problem. The suggestions offered
seemed really clear and easy to a simple layman here. Do we really have a
chance with AIS of changing things? Clarence dropped me a nice note about
this, but I guess I am asking for more information on how AIS works, since
in Jan I will send off my subscription (and get in on the whole year that
way, see... I listens to ya guys) and become a REAL irisarian. So many
governing bodies seem to get stuck, and cant make any changes once something
is in place. But since Clarence IS on the body, maybe there is hope.
One thing to remember here is that ALL of the voting they have been talking
about is done from seeing iris in the GARDEN. This is a really big deal and
requires judges to get out and see iris. Not always as easy as it sounds,
especially with everything going on in your own garden at the same time.
Seeing an iris grow in a convention garden or once in a visited garden is
not enough, and the show bench does not count at all. A judge is supposed to
see an iris in various circumstances and throughout the bloom/growing season
to properly evaluate it. This takes a lot of work to do properly but
presents its own set of rewards. Although a fairly new judge I take my
duties very seriously. My votes are the only way I have of telling the world
that I don't
feel that iris X does well here. It rots, blooms out, doesn't bloom, etc.
Unfortunately you cannot tell between a vote of no and I'm not familiar with
it. I personally feel that AIS is growing, learning, and listening. Much
better than many of the governing agencies for other things I have been
involved in.
How would one go about making these changes???
One way is by becoming a member of AIS and letting the powers that be know
how you feel. You can always write letters to the governing bodies. Another
is what we are doing right here. I daresay that Clarence and the others he
mentioned are getting a pretty good idea about what we do/don't like.
Finding a way to fix it is something I don't envy them.
Here till Thursday, then iris list withdrawl for 11 days. I'll think about
you every day tho... (NOT) giggle. Do they have irises in the Bahamas???
Gosh, life is good some days! >>
Yes, life is good, most days!
