Someone suggested the wisdom of retaining the letters (HM, AM) so as
not to confuse people in the future. That seems to make some sense.
What also seems to make some sense would be a way of conveying to the
non-insider that there is a progression in these awards. Perhaps HM
could stand for "High Merit", and AM could mean "Advanced Merit". I
certainly agree that "Honorable Mention" conveys the idea of, "Well,
nice try, but you didn't quite make the team."
