It sounds like there are many good ideas for improving the current iris
awards and rating systems. Unfortunatly any changes which are too complicated or
require extra work/money are not likely to happen. One thing which stands out to
me is the overwhelming likelyhood of a TB winning the Dykes, and since the
cultivar is also usually the Wister winner as well this award does little in
terms of identifying anything new.
Many people feel that non-TB and beardless Iris need some recognition
across species boundaries when breakthroughs have been made. Since all these
iris are included in the voting my suggestion is that the non-TB or Beardless
iris which receives the most votes (exclusive of TB's that is) should garner
some NEW award or (my preference) share the Dykes medal for that year. Of course
some minimum percentage or number of votes should apply to this aspect as well.
The cost of implementing such a change is minimal since there is no separate
vote only a change in the assement of the results.
