When it comes to fragrance from iris, the following four are about
the best I have, the ones that you notice when you just walk by the
clump. You'll notice none are new, though the 2 from the 60s have
modern form though they may lack the bud count we have come to expect.
All are very floriferous, however, with many stalks per plant and all
are vigorous, good growers with plenty of increase. Even the two
older ones are not the clearly-old-fashioned-in-appearance-must-be-
kept-for-historic-reasons-only type of flower.
CRINOLINE (Schreiner, 65) red/maroon plicata, yellow beard. Sweetest
of all, like very ripe Concord grapes.
DECOLLETAGE (Hager, 68) red and cream plicata, large flowers.
PRETTY PANSY (Sass, 55), purple and white, tall, slender stalks but
stands up, even in the winds of NW Iowa.
ALADDIN'S WISH (Murawska, 43) very similar in fragrance and appear-
ance to PRETTY PANSY.
I have no idea where these might be bought today, esp. the latter 2
would probably be hard to find. Hope this helps those who are on the
lookout for the fragrant varieties. I wouldn't want to do without
any of them.
Arnold (in NW Iowa, where it sounds as if we are in for some good,
substantial rain for a change, though I hope it's not like what some
of you have been experiencing on the east coast)
