Bill, I was surprised and delighted to read this, as we just had Calvin
as our program presenter Sunday night (Iris Society of the Ozarks, in
Springfield)! He brought in several of his Siberians to auction off,
and the program was the actual physical dividing of a clump of muddy
SPIRIT OF YORK. I tried to tear it apart with my bare hands, but others
were stronger than I! Anyway, I did get 3 little pieces, as did several
others, free! They are now soaking on my deck in the big saucer my
Louisiana pot is in, which is still full of water after Sunday's
wonderful 2-inch drought-buster. I opted not to buy any of the rest of
the iris, tho, for now. He said he sent out about 70 catalogs this
year. (I got one too).
Question #1: When I plant it, I know it will have to be rather sopping
wet for a time. When do I stop watering it and the Louisiana, when it
gets cold? Or when it frosts? (This is my first Sib, you see). And
depth--1 or 2 inches deep, something like that?
Question #2: When I plant it, do I feed it Miracid, or wait until
Spring? It's still pretty warm here, and it will probably grow for
awhile yet. The pieces have nice roots already.
Question #3: Since I am new to irising and have never wintered over
any, do irises in general grow some after frost, and stop only when
there's a hard freeze? Seems like I remember someone saying some iris
rebloom in the snow. That's incredible! Do I mulch it?
And that's enough questions! Thanks, Barb
