Re: Southern blight erwinia

Southern blight is just the most modern name for erwinia. There are several
forms of erwinia; soory I cannot give you the other Latin name. Erwinia
thrives in hot, wet weather. Little bright spore cases can be seen at the
base of the foliage , and seems to start on the outermost leaf, and then
spread inwards. Typically, the base of the fan turns dark, and the whole fan
topples over. Many west coast introductions have never been tested for
resistance to erwinia. I understand that Cooleys and Schreiners got lots of
rot this spring; possibly erwinia? I have had a good bit here currently, due
to the excess rain, - - and it rained again yesterday. I take a laissez faire
attitude. If they die, they die. There ARE varieties that seem never to be
killed by erwinia; they are the ones to use in hybridizing!!
