This is a good question and one that I asked at a recent judges training
school. According to Luella Danielson a plant gives its all to the bloom and
if you only have one fan that almost always spells doom. Per Luella if you
cut the stalk before the flower opens then that energy is redirected to the
plant propogating itself by making new rhizomes. I intend to try this the
next time the problem arises.
