Donald here:
I was 31 this year, as of 2/12/96. Although, I have noticed that I'm one of
the younger members at the meetings I've attended, iris folk are not all
"ready to die". If the individual who originally made that comment had ever
dug and divided irises or double-dug a flower bed, they would realize that
serious gardening with irises is an effective form of natural selection for
those not up to the task.
I've observed that, in general, not very many people my age have an
attachment to gardening . I guess they are too busy to stop and smell the
irises: climbing the corporate ladder, having kids, playing on the internet,
who really knows. I rarely notice people my own age, even out in public,
unless they mention gardening. All I know is that they are not at the
places I frequent - the hardware store, the local garden centers and
nurseries, plant society meetings, etc.
I've always loved gardening and plants, so I've learned to walk to the beat
of a different drum and if that means hanging out with the "OLD and ready to
die" crowd, then so be it.
-Donald (hopefully, I have many years to go, even though I consider myself
to be "iris folk")
