It's worth pointing out that the MDBs have a wide range of genetic
backgrounds. Generally speaking, the more Iris pumila they have, the
more they need the winter cold. Some MDBs are pure pumila, while others
(notably most of Hagers) are actually only 1/2 pumila, just like the
SDBs are. If you live in an area where SDBs do OK, but some MDBs fail,
try selecting MDBs from this SDB-type (40-chromosome) group.
