I don't know anything about hexagona, very little about LAs af any 
kind, but I can tell you brevicaulis is definitely hardy in Zone 4.  
It survived last winter, a very hard one, here in NW Iowa, so it 
should be able to take anything.  Even a severe freeze on April 10 
didn't destroy it.  I just got it last summer, and it bloomed this 
year.
