LA's in trouble?

Hello to all my mentors. I recently bought some LA's at the iris sale
here in Kansas City and did what I thought was the right thing, I
planted them in a fairly muddy spot. (I thought they liked lots of
water). Anyway, the tops of all of them are turning brown now. I go
out and talk to them but it hasn't helped yet. Should I dig one up
and see if roots are forming? Is this normal? Is there a doctor in
the house?
