I realize than many on this list are too new to the world of iris to have=
known the Grand Old Man of the Aril Society -- Herb McKusick. Long-time
ASI President. Chairman of their Plant Sale for over 20 years. =
Hybridizer, and mentor to many new hybridizers. He died last month at th=
e
age of 92, and his daughter sent me a memorial card that contains one of
Herb's own poems. I think he'd want me to share it:
SEASONS
Leaves of my life are now turning
bronze and copper and gold.
And there is the fragrance of burning
as nights grow longer and cold.
Life's seasons are always recurrant
and winter no permanent thing -
Yet to me it is nothing abhorrant --
my life cannot cycle to spring.
The SPIRIT FOR LIFE which has sired me
shall take me again in its power
And composting all that is mortal
renew me in some shining flower.
Herbert H. McKusick
Yes. I've named an iris for him.
