CULT - Rocks on Rhizomes

I keep hearing the advice to place a rock on top of the rhizome to keep it
from frost heaving. Has anyone ever checked out whether this works or not?
It would surprise me greatly if it has any utility. Frost will lift
multistory buildings for Pete's sake. It is one of the very strong forces
of nature and I doubt that a rock capable of being lifted by a human would
deter it. Superman was really just Jack Frost in disguise.:..)

I wonder if this doesn't belong with that other myth that says you should
put broken crockery etc. in the bottom of a pot to improve drainage. In
fact it does exactly the opposite and hampers drainage.
