Your description, Arnold, does indeed sound like Monarch caterpillars.
They are cream-colored with black and yellow bands around the body (not
longitudinal stripes) and with filaments fore and aft. What doesn't match
is that these filaments are permanently extended in monarch caterpillars,
while swallowtail caterpillars have extensible ones.
We can continue this off-list if you like. Maybe there is someone locally
who can help you identify your caterpillars!
