RE: Seed Production
From: "J.F. Hensler" <hensler@povn.com>
I'm finding it interesting to hear what the goofy weather is doing to seed
set in different areas. It's encouraging to hear that it's not all bad.
We seem to have had one of the worst scenarios with yo-yo temperatures and
little rain. Spring lasted about 1 1/2 weeks then went immediately to
Summer with temps in the 80s and 90s just until we got used to the idea.
July was hot and dry with a few crashes down to the low 40s at night just
for fun.
Seed set was spotty on just about everything. TBs are just now ripening and
the first few aren't anything to brag about. Nice seeds, but not many per
pod. Siberians and Setosas are looking about the same, but the jury is
still out on the Spurias, LAs, and psuedacorus.
We've just gone again from the 90s down to an overnight low of 30 degrees.
We're told that we'll have one more chilly night then it should bounce back
into the high 80s with lows only into the 40s.
Much more of this and I'll get dizzy......
Anyone raising I. dicotoma or Pardancanda might like to know they CAN take
a light frost without breaking stride. Candies are beginning to bloom and
the dicotomas are close to showing buds. :)
