OT: soil

From: Dennis Kramb <dkramb@badbear.com>

This weekend I have been planting my Louisiana Irises and other swamp
loving plants (such as Turtlehead [Chelone lyonii], Cardinal Flower
[Lobelia cardinalis], etc.) and I had quite a shock!

In the middle of my backyard (where I am putting the new bed) about 2 ft.
down I hit pure sand. Now I live in the middle of a suburb and I'm on top
of a hill. I can't imagine that sand is there naturally....but it is quite
some distance from the house (30 ft?) do you really think it could be that
the builders dumped it there and then plowed over top with 2 ft. of soil??
The house was built in 1970 if that changes anything.

I don't know how good this bed this will be for Louisianas. That sand is
really going to wick away the water, I imagine. On the other hand it is a
relatively low spot in my yard, and the water does tend to pond there
during rain showers.

What do y'all think??
