Re: TB: CULT: Help - tough newish irises

From: Linda Mann <lmann@icx.net>

Thanks Mike, Rosalie, John, and Walter - ART DECO is listed as an early
bloomer in the Schreiner catalog - sure death here most years, tho it
probably would have done well last spring. Nice to know about
inconsistent stalk height for BLUE SUEDE SHOES - that's a major problem
in my garden for some cultivars (always the same ones - either erratic
spring cold, previous season drought, bloom season drought, or who knows
what, but I don't like consistent <10 inch stalks on TBs).

In the early iris-list days somebody (maybe Clarence?) suggested that
growing conditions in France where the Cayeauxs breed irises are
somewhat similar to mine & I've noticed that some of the parents of
their new intros are older things that will grow for me, but I haven't
tried CONDOTIERRE or DELPHI. I think ALIZES may be alive here
somewhere. One of their intros, COLLETTE THURILLET (sp?) was among the
few that bloomed for me spring of '98.

Mike, if FASHION STATEMENT is finicky for you guys, it would probably
die here for sure, even if it does grow well for one of your neighbors.

Thanks folks - you've helped me trim the list a bit.

Anybody else have or know of some recent ones that seem to be tough as
nails? Fast growth isn't necessary (sometimes those aren't as tough as
the slow growers).
