I would hesitate to call this a mutation. A mutation is basically
a change (damage) to DNA. It would be better to use the term
"deformation". These deformed blooms are usually caused by
weather or chemicals at a critical point in formation of the flower.
Excessive cold, heat, moisture or herbicide drift is most likely the culprit.
It has NO effect on pollen, if indeed any pollen forms on the deformed flower,
nor is the plant itself likely to perpetuate the deformity on future stalks.
There are a few "novelties" out there in iris land that are fairly consistent
in strange blooms, however. FULL HOUSE comes to mind, with five
standards and five falls the norm.
