I am very pleased with the Redbud blooms this year on my hill on the Sutter
Buttes in California. Received the tiny trees about three years ago from
the Arbor day foundation. They are now about six feet and covered with
blooms. Still kind of skinny though. The purchased Redbud shrub from a
nursery in Chico, about five years ago in five gallon cans, still refuse
to oblige though they have grown to a five by five shrub. I whacked them
back this fall right to the ground almost and was rewarded with some bloom
this spring, but nothing like the show put on by the free?? Redbud from the
foundation.
I am thinking one is Western Redbud and one not. Probably too much TLC for
the Western as I understand they prefer to be ignored during the summer.
They are not native to this particular part of the valley so don't know how
either will survive long run. The foothills on either side of the
Sacramento valley have lovely Redbud blooming now so I have hope.
