I planted a 'garden variety' wisteria (purchased in bloom - 5 gal size) in
the front of my first house, which it covered immediately, sold that house 4
years later without seeing it bloom. Second house - I built a 40 foot
trellis and another wisteria covered it and went 30 feet up the adjacent
Italian cypress. Moved 4 years later - never saw a flower. I never
fertilized either plant and they were in "unimproved" soil.
At my current house we have 3 different wisteria. Texas Pink
flowered the third Spring, it grows though a hole in my deck and only gets
the water that drips out of the pots on the deck. This is really a blue
pink, but it is magnificent. Black dragon - planted the same year - has not
grown as quickly , nor has it flowered in this it's 4th year. Another
'garden variety' planted nearby, flowered this year sparingly for the first
time. It has not been very vigorous - I think it got root pruned by gopher's
the first year.
I am sure we will move the year before Black Dragon looks
magnificent. My only consolation is that the Heronswood catalog alludes to
it's difficulty as well.
