Title: Re: ya'arot yapaniot
I grow L. japonica
halliana up the side of my bedroom deck in Redding (very hot dry summers, some
frost in winter). It is planted in the shade between a plum tree and the
deck supports on the south side of the house. It has climbed to about ten
feet and stopped, but produces a tremendous number of side branches that snake
along the ground behind a hedge and under the deck itself. I pull them up
a couple times a year and prune off the trunk branches. The fragrance is
lovely and it has thrived with no particular care in a nasty dry place, but it
is protected from wind. It did house a rat one summer, so I cut it
back. I have not seen any escapee seedlings around Redding so am not too
concerned about it naturalizing in the northern Central Valley of
California. It doesn't seem to produce much in the way of berries here,
though it flowers all summer long (it started flowering about a week ago).
Mine doesn't have any purplish color--fresh flowers are white and spent ones a
butter yellow. Yes I can see how it would be badly behaved in a more
benign climate, but I admire anything that can survive here without disappearing
underground in the summer.
