Re: Salvia

Dear J.N.,(and Kathleen and the the two Richards)

(Kathleen, could you fax this to Richard Ward for me?  Hope you're doing well, and see you in July?)

As I am currently in Saudi Arabia and do not have all my addresses and reference books with me, I can not directly give you Betsy Clebsch's e-mail address or phone number, but if you contact the Cal Hort Society in San Francisco, or my nurseryman friend Richard Ward of the Dry Garden in Oakland, California at 510  547 3564, he should be able to give you Betsy's phone number in Woodside/La Honda, California, where she lives and gardens.  It would probably also be listed in the 650 area code.  If you don't get ahold of Richard, then try e-mailing Richard Turner at r*@aol.com, who is the current editor of Pacific Horticulture Magazine, and a close friend of Betsy's as well.  I'm sorry that I don't remember her number or e-mail address myself, but 6 months away will do that to one's memory.

I am fairly certain that all the species that I listed are valid names and not synonyms, but the majority are not hardy outside of coastal California, and would not survive the heat and humidity of the south/ eastern US summers, nor the winters with frosts any more than  1 to 2 degrees below freezing, so are not suitable as year round plants throughout much of the US.  The list I gave is most suitable for mild maritime mediterranean climates such as zones 16/17/21-24 of California as listed in Sunset Western Garden Book

As to people to contact about the species that I had mentioned, try Nevin Smith of Suncrest Nursery/ 408 728 2595, or Jeff or Lisa Rosendale of Rosendale Nursery/408 725 2899, or Monterey Bay Nursery/408 724 6361, or Dave Fross at Native Sons Nursery/805 481 5996, or San Marcos Growers/805 683 1561/ web site www.smgrowers.com.  All of these species have also been grown at both the UC Berkeley Botanic Garden and Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco.  I am rather surprised that my list seemed uncommon, as the list that Richard Dufresne furnished to the Medit-Plants Group seemed much more uncommon to me, and Richard would certainly seem like a very good person to contact.  Hope this helps, and if you contact either Dick Turner or Richard Ward, please tell them hello for me, and that I'm on my way around the world to get back to the Bay Area!

Ginny Hunt at s*@aol.com might be a good source for seed, as well as the two botanical gardens mentioned, and the California Horticultural Society's seed exchange.  The Theodore Payne Foundation at 818 768 1802 would be a good source for native california species.

Best regards,

David Feix

David,

I have been a member of the Medit-Plants listserve for
sometime now and recieved a post by you on Salvias.I
am having trouble finding some of the species listed
in the Cal-Flora, USDA, or IOPI databases.Could some
of these be synonyms? Also you mentioned Betsy
Clebsch.
Do you know how to contact her or someone who might.

We are currently working on research involving the
entire Lamiaceae family and will soon be working on
the Salvias.Any help with info or seed sources would
be greatly appreciated.
Cordially,
