I think possibly the latter. There is already a Lamiaceae group, and as
larger interests arise from major genera, I suspect groups will form, at
least experimentally.
There are a lot of monotypic mints like Perrierastrum oreophyllum that will
be better off on a Lamiaceae group (although Perrierastrum is closely
related to Plectranthus). Even Agastache, though popular, has a limited
number of species and would probably be better off in a Lamiaceae group.
