I've often wondered about Cussonia paniculata and had a very brief

dismissive about it at the time since I was probably going through a
phase when the Araliaceae was low down on my list of priority
families.
However, I grew it under cold glass when I had my nursery and was
impressed with its growth rate. within a very short time, it shot to
nearly 3 metres developing the traditional, slightly swollen, corky
barked trunk. It seemed highly tolerant of being root bound since the
plant was contained in a 12" pot throughout its life. For a couple of
years it withstood temperatures dropping to minus 2C without losing a
single leaflet. It was killed during the winter of 1981/82 when
temperatures plunged to unbelievable depths. I'm tempted to give it a
go here and have an ideal spot in the most sharply drained, rubbly
soil imaginable.
