Re: speaking of almonds

I was driving 40 minutes east of San Jose in 34F and
snow yesterday at 6pm, on top of Mt. Hamilton. Then,
driving through the valleys in the Diablo Range, east
of the peak, we found temperatures didn't rise above
40 until we nearly reached Livermore (500 foot
elevation). Blue oaks (Quercus douglasii) that had
leafed out in the Santa Clara Valley (San Jose/Silicon
Valley)--alongside queen palms (Syagrus
romanzoffiana)--were leafless in the interior valleys
of the Diablo Range. How wise the trees can be.
Returning to maritime San Francisco for a late dinner,
it was back in the 50's. While I'm used to the summer
division between foggy chilly coast and ovenlike
interior, I've rarely experienced our radical
juxtapositions of microclimates in winter.
