What I think is an even better method than this one is to just set up
a second mailing list, but on yahoo (yahoogroups), that is just for
images. I know of several plant-related lists that do this and it
works extremely well. Those that can either afford to or have the
high-speed connection or patience can subscribe and get the images,
and those that don't want any images, and also don't want to worry
about attached viruses, can choose NOT to subscribe to the image
list. Meanwhile, the main list can be set to not allow any kind of
attachment. When someone wants to make special mention of some image
they want people to see, they can tell the main list that they're
planning on sending it to the image list. It can be named something
easy such as medit-plant-images, for example.
I subscribe to two lists that use this method, the International Bulb
Society, and the Passiflora list. No one has complained since they
were begun.
