Nan - I'm afraid you neglected to mention species. All the Scadoxus are from
summer rainfall areas & require additional summer water.- some more than
others. The S.membranaceous extends into the Southern Cape region & is the
most robust, S. puniceus is the next hardiest & the S. multiflorus subsp
katherinae is definitely softer & requires more protection & water. Give
them all shade & an open humus rich mix for best advantage. I have mine
growing under a plum tree, with heavy root competition, & a deep summer
watering of every 5 -7 days. The katherinae gets by, but would do better
with more water I think. Watch for snails. They associate well in this
situation with the Haemanthus spp & Veltheimea, so that there is nearly
always something of interest flowering in that patch.
