Re: human influence in the Medit.

Karrie:

You're taking on such a tiny topic.  NOT!

There are plenty of atlases of history out there.  My favorite is  the DK "Atlas of World History -- Mapping the Human Journey".

Page 15 shows the movement of humans into the Mediterranean and down to South Africa.

Pages  16-19 shows "settling the globe". Page 21 shows the advent of agriculture. Page 23 shows expansion after agriculture.  Pages 27-33 shows the development of real culture in the Mediterranean

Pages 52-53 shows "migrations and invasions". in the Med.  Pages 80-83 shows European "discovery" of South Africa.  Pages 156-160 offers more on African expansion and society.

It's all good stuff.

Hello All:
I am currently taking a graduate seminar at UC Davis on the Ecosystems of the world’s Mediterranean climate regions.  It covers the climate, flora, fauna, fire regime and human influences on these regions.  The professor is actually hoping to use our research and presentations to put together an undergraduate course on the topic for the fall quarter.  The lot has fallen to me to cover the human influences in the Mediterranean rim and South Africa’s medit. region, including the earliest indigenous occupation, major immigrations, agricultural practices and uses, including grazing, the extent of land set aside as reserves and any pertinent social structures that have influenced land use.  Imagine all that compressed into a concise summarized Powerpoint presentation of 20 minutes!

I thought before I go beyond the two books I’ve begun with, I would cull the vast collective wisdom of this group for any particularly good sources you would recommend.  And please remember, I am not doing a complete thesis that would require many hours of digging, so easy to use is best! J

Thanks in advance,
