Re: RE Lonicera

Ye, you're right, normal garden honeysuckles can cause stomach upset if ingested. But this variety is edible. As you say  the problem is to find it. In the same article, they were talking about other edible crops as Cornus mas, Aronia melanocarpa, Cydonia oblonga, sorbus aucuparia var. edulis and hippophae rhamnoides.

Interesting, I was brought up to believe honeysuckle particularly the berries is toxic, however Facciola’s “Cornucopia”  lists the edible varieties and a list of suppliers. The problem with this book  is wading through the codes and then finding either that the suppliers listed don’t supply seeds or the information is obsolete. We are coming up to the peak of our season at the moment (and selling the ordinary wild species fast) so I will leave it to someone in the Southern hemisphere or desperate for supposedly edible Lonicera to investigate this further .

Mrs Grieve wrote that the stems were a substitute for Bittersweet and were diaphoretic and sudorific and that honeysuckle berries generally are emiticocathartic so I would be inclined to stick to blueberries or Bilberries. Presumably it is no coincidence that  Blueberries appear in both Timber Press’s “Food Plants of the World” and its companion “Medicinal Plants of the world” whilst Loniceras only appear in the latter.

Good luck with the next dinner party

Anthony
