Re: bromeliad specialty nursery in Bay area

Nan,
You probably have a better selection to choose from in
southern California than here in the SF Bay Area.
There are nurseries that sell bromeliads, but none
that specialize in them anymore. Shelldance Nursery
in Pacifica is probably the only one, and even they
have switched to growing more orchids than bromeliads
these days, and no longer grow the vast selection they
once had, it is now mostly all hybrid Guzmanias.

There are several wholesale growers in the Watsonville
area that do grow some bromeliads, such as Suncrest.
The local SF Bromeliad Society does several sales of
bromeliads locally, at SF Botanic Garden, one coming
up in mid June, and we will also be furnishing a table
with bromeliads for the annual spring sale at
Strybing.

I have taken to growing my own bromeliads for use in
garden designs, as I mostly use ones that are hardy
outdoors. If anyone is interested in the use of
landscape bromeliads, this will be the theme of our
local chapter meeting tonight, 7:30pm, April 19th, at
the Hall of Flowers. If you would like to see a list
of mail order suppliers, I would suggest that you go
to the BSI site, at www.bsi.org, which has a good list
of growers, with many of them in Florida.

Also, wholesale indoor plant nurseries often have a
good selection of more tender species, and can be a
good source for bromeliads. There are several located
here, both at the SF Flower Market and elsewhere, but
many do not cater to retail trade.
