Mystery Growth (?)

I was out in the garden the other day and while looking at a Prunus ilicifolia we have, I noticed on a bit of copper wire attached to one branch this strange growth of ovoid objects attached to the end of thin stalks that were attached to the free end of the wire, like so:

I have no idea what this might be. It's a bit disturbing as it doesn't look right (I've never seen anything growing ON copper wire before). Any idea what it might be?
