Dear threatened species,
Maybe the dogs could be trained to see
the green thumbs as well. Perhaps they
would quarantine you and not throw the
condemned grower on a funeral byre.
Tasmanian Govt. is desperate to
enlarge our population and still retain our
clean, green image. We could become a haven
for driven and frustrated gardeners,
it would be terrific to meet you all!
Every year the birds of the bush drop papaver
seeds in my garden. It is the very last weed [!]
I pull out. We have official opium farmers
here [for exported medicine, we are not alowed
to use Opium derivatives in Australia even for
medical purposes] and when I see the beautiful
scarlet with black dab in the centre poppies
flourishing in the garden, I am soooo glad I
didn't find time to weed them out.
One time when they were in flower, particularly
beautiful and plentiful that year,
I was showing the garden to a chap from our
Agriculture Dept who was going to interview me
and the garden for commercial TV. His Ag. job was
the inspection of all vegetables, new varieties
and seeds that were imported into the State.
I had forgotten the vivid dashes of colour
that was making themselves so noticeable in the
garden.
I quickly explained that the lovely things were
all dropped via the wind and the birds. He
smiled, kind man, and gave me a hint of what
to say if ever challenged. Apparently, the
stronger the colour of the flower, the less
viable they are as opium producers.
I do not see how that can be, no more than I
can see why they are usually scarlet in my garden
with only a few of the pale lavender coloured
flowers that grow in the professional poppy
fields.
I do NOT want to know that the generous man
was only being a true gentleman. I religiously
pull out the mauve-lavender presents from
my friends, the birds but somehow never get
around to killing their brothers and sisters.
One should never look a gift horse in the mouth.
