The natural diversity of California plants, particularly in purely Med
zones like coastal scrub argues for the complexity of climate there.
BUT, "large expanses of a single zone" in other Western states? This is
really a reflection of SUNSET's californicentric bias. Their hort zones
tend to vary inversely in area with population [market] included.
Complex topography, rain/snow fall amount and distribution, and soil
types vary as comlplexely throughout the western US.
If you look at SUNSET's "Zone 1", for instance, it incorporates rain
forest to desert to alpine natural vegetation. It really means, "why are
you bothering to subscribe to us?"
