Scented vs. Scentless clones

Tim & Dunkley:

I have a Salvia melissodora clone from the Tarahumara Indians of southern
Chihuahua which has grape-scented flowers. Friends have reported to me that
most of its seedlings have scentless flowers. I assume that this is a
feature of highly selected species. There are probably many other examples
of gene pool regressions like this, so it would be worthwhile to investigate
the provenance of what you buy as well as try out its scent. Other good
examples are tarragon from seed (not a bit of scent), and Greek oregano (who
knows what it will taste like).
