Dear Medit-planters all,
I am re-sending this because it was rejected the first time. It
seems my e-mail address has been changed without my knowledge
("oz" becomes "com"):
The wonderful early autumn rains we had here in Perth at Easter
were so timely for my new garden which is being installed next
week - then I might have some plants worth writing about ... :)
When I visit the annual Garden Week show tomorrow I might pick up a
treasure or two as well, who knows.
I have made a circular paved area and wanted to put in one of
those wonderful Royal Poinciana trees - there is a glorious one
growing around the corner - but common-sense prevailed. They grow
so enormously wide and though the problem might not arise in my
lifetime it seems rather stupid to put one in where there is not
enough room. So I have settled on a Tipuana and hope it will
fill the bill.
In the meantime, my Feijoa has about finished dropping its
fruits (you can never tell how many there are before they drop
because they are so well camouflaged!). The amount of fruit has
increased greatly since there has been another Feijoa across the
street. Unfortunately the fruit-fly moved in about the same time.
This is the home of Boronia megastigma - quite a shock for a
Melbournian who always believed they originated in Collins
Street. I find that the first wonderful rush of scent tends to
fade after a short time. Funny thing, the sense of smell.
Welcome home from Greece, Meg! Looking forward to hearing your
impressions while they are fresh!
I am going to England at the beginning of August for my son's
wedding (in Chester) and plan a few free days in that country,
some of them probably around Plymouth where my new d-i-l's
parents live. I hope for some hints from our UK friends about
interesting things to see (I've _been_ to Kew, though might go again!)
Happy gardening,
Beverly Elischer
