Bay Area Gardeners and Plantspersons -
I was planning to draw you attention to today's Home section of the
San Francisco Chronicle, as I understood that there would be a nice
list of local garden tours taking place in the next few weeks. To
my amazement, I've just discovered this morning that I am in the
photo (1/2 page, full color!) on the front of this special section!
I guess I just happened to be at the right place at the right time,
helping Terracotta install their 'Hollywood Postcard' garden in the
SF Landscape and Garden Show (which runs today through Sunday, Fri
evening till 9pm; call (415)750-5108 for more info). (I created the
planting at the front of Terracotta's garden.)
I was a great kick to be involved this year as there are many very
interesting and innovative gardens and displays which were created
for the show - definitely worth seeing IMHO, I can't wait to go
myself as many were still in progress when I was there over the
weekend.
Anyway, back to the Chronicle Home Section - there is a great list
of local garden tours so be sure and pick if up for reference. Even
if you won't have time, it'll be a good guide to future forays or
visits. On April 27, Park Day School presents "Secret Gardens of
the East Bay", which has become quite a well-run operation, and this
year will feature some very interesting gardens. Keeyla Meadows'
color packed and artful garden, which has been published several
times in books and magazines, will be on their tour this year.
Richard and Shari Sullivan, of Enchanting Planting, will feature
their home garden, full of unusual and exciting plants, some of
which Richard has grown from seed collected in far off foreign parts
and from his own breeding. The last remains of the famous Adolf
Shilling (of Shillings Spices & Seasonings) Estate Garden will be
the backdrop for a talk during this event. Call (510)653-6250 for
info.
The Ruth Bancroft Garden, in Walnut Creek, will have their tour on
April 30, including a visit to this and other local gardens, as well
as a plant sale. The Bancroft Garden is truely worth a visit if you
have not yet seen it (even it you have), with its exotic and unusual
array of cacti, succulents, drought tolerant shrubs and trees,
beautifully arranged around a central 'gazebo' built by Ruth's late
husband. This garden was originally designed with Lester Hawkins
(famous California plantswoman). Call (510)210-9663 for more info.
Hope this has gotten you excited about checking out what's
happeningg in gardens this spring - there are lots and lots of other
events that might interest you! So much is 'happening
horticulturally' here in the Bay Area!! Check out Carol Moholt's
'The Bay Area Gardener' for online info regarding many of these
events - http://www.gardens.com/
Enjoy spring!
